Housing assistance

Housing benefit is a subsidy for rent that you can apply for if you live in a rented house. Udbetaling Danmark determines whether you are entitled to housing benefit. Read more about the rules here.

Here you can apply for housing benefit

You have the opportunity to apply for housing benefit if you live in a rented house. You do this at Udbetaling Danmark, which decides whether you are entitled to receive rent support - Haderslev Boligselskab has no influence on whether you can receive housing benefit. Udbetaling Danmark is also responsible for the payments. You can go directly to the application process in the box.

You get this in housing benefit

You must live in a home with your own kitchen to receive housing benefit. How much you can get depends on, among other things:

  • What you pay in rent
  • How big is the house?
  • How many of you live together?
  • Your total income and assets

If you are eligible for housing benefit, the amount is typically between DKK 259 and DKK 3.873 per month.

You can make a preliminary calculation here whether you can get housing benefit.
To do this, you will need your lease agreement, pay slips and any SU or pension notices or your annual statement from the Danish Tax Authority.

Changes in your income

If your income changes, Udbetaling Danmark will automatically receive a notification from Skat, so you do not need to contact Udbetaling Danmark yourself. If the changes are major, you will probably experience that your housing benefit will be either higher or lower - the adjustment will happen automatically. If the amount of your housing benefit changes, you will receive a letter from Udbetaling Danmark about it.
Oplysninger om ændringer i din husleje og bolig bliver også automatisk overført.

– The exception

If you are self-employed or receive a salary from a foreign employer, you must notify Udbetaling Danmark if your income changes. Udbetaling Danmark must also be notified if, for example, there are more or fewer people in the household, or if you are going abroad for an extended period of time.

You can read more about what you need to notify Udbetaling Danmark about, and about the rule changes that came into effect in 2016, which mean that you no longer need to tell them if your income changes. Find information about the rule changes here.

Help with resident deposits

Your municipality decides whether you can borrow for the deposit when you move into your new public rental home. This has nothing to do with housing benefit and Udbetaling Danmark.
